Natural Resources

The Firm's partners have extensive experience in a broad array of natural resource law issues.  Mr. Griggs began his career as a participant in the Solicitor’s Honors Program at the Department of the Interior, where he served as an attorney advising the Secretary, Assistant Secretaries, and agency heads on natural resource issues.  Mr. Griggs aided in the resolution of a long-running claim of a Colorado Indian tribe to lands abutting the Colorado River.  He participated in litigation challenging offshore oil leasing on the North Slope of Alaska, drafted regulations governing unitization of offshore oil leases, and handled a wide range of land management issues faced by the National Park Service and the National Fish and Wilflife Service.  Mr. Griggs was instrumental in obtaining Wild and Scenic Rivers status for the New River in West Virginia to protect it from hydroelecric development.  Mr. Griggs was involved in litigation over the Spanish treasure galleon, Nuestra Senora de Atocha, to protect federal archeological and historical interests.  As an attorney in the General Counsel’s Office of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the late-1970s, Mr. Griggs played a primary role in defeating legal challenges to the viability of the U.S. commercial nuclear power program and drafted important Commission opinions on licensing of power reactors and long-term storage and disposal of nuclear waste.  Mr. Griggs has experience reviewing environmental impact statements prepared under the National Environmental Policy Act, and he has participated in litigation involving enforcement of the Clean Water Act.  Both Mr. Griggs and Ms. Adler have extensive experience working to achieve legislative solutions to claims arising under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.  In pro bono work, Mr. Griggs and Ms. Adler have assisted two community organizations, Reston Neighbors and the the Save the Glade Stream Coalition, in preserving natural areas located in Reston, Virginia.
